$75,000 for Badminton Club Roof

Woodstock's 100-year-old badminton club is getting a new roof. Trillium officials were at the club on Friday morning to help announce a 75-thousand dollar grant to cover most of the cost of a new steel roof. That will protect the courts, which Club President Kevin Couglar says has faced a tough couple of years. "The roof has been leaking for several years and we have what are widely regarded as the best courts for badminton is South-Western Ontario, so we want to protect them as much as possible." Chair of the Trillium Grant Review team for the area, Bettianne Hedges tells Heart FM she sees it as protecting a piece of Woodstock's heritage. "I grew up in this neighbourhood, a beautiful building, fits in great with the neighbourhood. So it's nice to restore something architecturally significant in the area and there's a lot going on inside the building also." The Woodstock Badminton Club has a couple hundred members, and hosts provincial tournaments, and a new growing sport called "Pickleball". (see Video Update - March 16th) Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman helped make the announcement today and says it's a worthwhile grant. "It's a very good investment I think on behalf of the Trillium Foundation to put a roof on, to cover the good services that are being provided here at the badminton club. This isn't the first time I've been here, I was here a few years ago when we were announcing a Trillium Grant when the floor was being refurbished." The new steel roof will protect those courts for at least another 50-years.
