The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford County is looking for unwanted Ipods to harness the healing power of music.
The Alzheimer Society of Oxford County wants your old IPods and ITunes cards.
Executive Director Shelley Green says studies show people suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia really benefit from listening to music. "There is a very strong link between music and memory; music can help stimulate conversations, can relieve anxiety, and it can reconnect an individual with their past memories. It seems to have a very profound affect with making connections to their past and helping them to do better cognitively and be able to engage a little bit better."
Green says they have launched a new program where they try to give IPods to people suffering from Alzheimer's in Oxford County. "Currently what we're looking at is introducing this through our volunteer companion program, and that program is where we have trained volunteers of our organization matched with individuals who are living with Alzheimer's or dementia in the community and our volunteers go and visit for at least 2 hours once a week."
They will select music that has had deep meaning for each individual, hopefully invoking some positive memories. Green says you can help by donating your old IPods or ITunes gift cards or by donating money so they can purchase the equipment. You can drop off your IPods or monetary donations at the Alzheimer Society's office at 575 Peel Street in Woodstock.
