Amanda Nelson plans to run 88 miles tomorrow near her home in North Woodstock to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Oxford County.
WOODSTOCK - A Woodstock woman plans to run 88 miles tomorrow for the Alzheimers Society of Oxford County.
Amanda Nelson is doing the run for her 88 year old grandfather who is currently living with dementia. Last year she ran 87 kilometres for his 87th birthday. This year she is running 88 miles or 142 kilometres, which is the equivalent of 3 and half marathons in one day. Nelson explains why she is running the extra miles this year.
"It has been a hard year for everybody and with the struggles of the COVID-19 restrictions, and the restrictions have been really hard for anyone living with Alzheimers."
Nelson says it is tough to see someone you love, live with Alzheimers.
"It has been hard to see how much my grandpa struggles, it was his biggest fear in life was to lose his mind and that is what happened and it is really hard to see that."
Nelson will be doing the run with the help of her husband Danny Nelson and her friend and another ultra runner in Mickey Scott. Nelson says they do plan to break up the day a bit.
"I am going to be laps around the block near my home in North Woodstock, it is an 8.9 kilometre loop, so I am going 16 laps and I will probably take a little break between every lap, just a small 3-5 minute break to eat something quick and carry on."
We will be following her run on social media tomorrow. Make sure to cheer her on if you see running in North Woodstock all day Saturday.
You can donate to her cause online through the Alzheimers Society here.
