They would like the province to maintain the municipalities right to approve or deny new landfills.
OXFORD - A joint statement has been released by all of Oxford County's municipalities, as the provincial government considers some changes to the legislation for landfills.
Ontario’s Proposed Actions to Address Landfill Capacity is currently undergoing public consultation through the Environmental Registry of Ontario.
The leaders of Woodstock, Tillsonburg, Ingersoll, East Zorra-Tavistock, Zorra, South-West Oxford, Blandford-Blenheim and Norwich agree that the Ford Government should explore waste management alternatives and try to achieve a waste-free Ontario. However, they would like the province to commit to maintaining the municipalities right to approve or deny new landfills.
Bill 197 was passed in 201, after the Town of Ingersoll led the We Demand the Right campaign.
Environment Minister Todd McCarthy has stated that the bill will be maintained.
