The Woodstock Police have laid charges after responding to a hate-motivated crime in the city.
WOODSTOCK - Charges have been laid in a hate-motivated crime.
The Woodstock Police Service was called to Southside Park last Tuesday at 6 p.m. after a report of a youth displaying a firearm to other youth. During the investigation, officers determined the young person started an argument with two others, began directing racial slurs, displayed what looked like a handgun and threatened to shoot them.
The two youth were able to leave the area safely and report the incident. Nobody was physically injured. Officers got to the park and took a 14-year-old into custody, and while they were arresting the youth, another youth, a 17-year-old, allegedly struck an officer and was also arrested. A replica handgun and folding pocketknife were seized at the scene.
As a result, the 14-year-old is facing two counts of Hate Motivated - Uttering Threats, and one count each of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Resisting a Peace Officer. The 17-year-old is facing one count of Assaulting a Peace Officer.
Both youth have been released on undertakings and will appear in court at a later date.
