Sixteen girls attended the fire camp in Blandford-Blenheim Township last week.

BLANDFORD-BLENHEIM - Another Camp 85 is in the books for Blandford-Blenheim Fire Prevention.

It's an annual summer camp for aspiring young firefighters between the ages of 14 and 18, alternating between boys and girls each year. It was the girls turn this year and they had 16 of them go through the four-day program last week.

Fire Chief Drew Davidson says they learned use the hoses at the Plattsville Fire Station on Tuesday, before heading to the Bright Fire Station on Wednesday to try out forcible entry tactics.

"So they were breaking doors and climbing to new heights. Some of them had never been up an extension ladder before, so they had all of the safety apparatus and everything for them to do that. We also had a roof prop so they could practice cutting a hole in the roof, so that was Day 2. OPP and EMS also came out to join us to broaden the spectrum of emergency services."

Davidson says Day 3 was all about auto extrication at the Drumbo Fire Station and Day 4 focused on search and rescue at the Plattsville Fire Station.

"So they were able to experience putting on an air pack and crawling through a maze. They also got to break some drywall and breach a wall."

Davidson says the camp will be geared towards boys in 2027. An information night will be held in April, and Davidson says those who are interested will be able to find all of the information on the Blandford-Blenheim Fire Prevention Facebook page in the spring.
