The Woodstock Police are reminding everyone to be careful when doing your Christmas shopping this year.
WOODSTOCK - It's the time when many of us do our Christmas shopping, but all those packages left in cars can present an opportunity for thieves as well.
Woodstock Police Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen tells us it's important to try and keep everything out of view to passersby. "It's unfortunate, and these things happen every year and I'm sure they'll happen this year. But if people can keep items in their trunk, or if you do make a lot of purchases if you can somehow get them home or keep them out of sight it's going to prevent any thefts."
VanLeeuwen also warns about a tag-team approach some thieves have been known to use in this area in the past. "Usually it will be a two person team. When you're bringing purchases out of where ever you're shopping to put them in your car they'll distract you by asking for directions, get out a map, and while you're being distracted - if you set your purse or anything in your vehicle they'll steal it at that time and sneak away."
If you can, try to keep purchases and other items out of view if they must be left in your car. The best way to protect yourself is to try and take everything inside if possible.
