Woodstock Fire Department are reminding residents to have a 72 hour Emergency Kit in the house.

WOODSTOCK - As residents in Arthur can tell you, you just never know when an emergency will hit.

The Woodstock Fire Department is taking the time to remind residents about the need to have a 72 hour Emergency Kit on hand, especially with all of the severe thunderstorm watches, warning and even tornado warnings over the past few weeks.

Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says you should always take these warnings seriously.

"There are many ways you can get those alerts. You can get them through watching the television, you get them through the social media, you can get them through the newspaper, the radio. There are many ways to get those, you should be paying attention and heed them. Don't wait and think it's not going to happen to you because it can happen and it will throw you for a loop if you're not prepared."

"Some of the things that we have here in our area that we need to concerned about are tornados, floods, blizzards --- in winter months of course, transportation accidents involving hazardous materials, rail or air crashes, toxic or flammable gas leaks, disease outbreaks -- they may not have happened in years but they can happen, power blackouts -- we had that one August."

Woods says some of the items you should have in the 72 hour kit are batteries, crank radio, first aid kit, candles and matches.

"Extra car keeps, cash in case debit machines are down, important papers like identification, medication, non perishable food, ready eat items that do not require refrigeration, a manual can opener, bottled water, 4 litres per person per day."
