A documentary about the creation of the Bird Set Free statue in Florence Carlyle Park will be screened at the Market Centre Theatre.
WOODSTOCK - It's a chance to learn more about the new statue in Florence Carlyle Park.
Bird Set Free was officially unveiled about a month ago and it's in honour of Florence Carlyle. She was an internationally renowned artist that grew up in Woodstock back in the 1800s, but she eventually settled down in England with her partner Judith Hastings in 1911, before her passing in 1923.
The sculpture Bird Set Free shows a bird breaking free of a cage that also resembles a corset. The statue is gold in colour on the outside, but if you step inside it and look up, you will see a rainbow of colours.
The Woodstock Art Gallery (WAG) announced the Florence Carlyle Sculpture Commission in May of 2023, honouring the 100th anniversary of her death. Duane and Urszula Kumala-Thomas were awarded the commission in June 2024, and Duane says they documented the whole journey.
"It was a three-year process to build the sculpture and we documented the whole process through photos and videos. We put together a documentary to go along with it and it's being screened at the Market Centre Theatre on Thursday, June 25th at 6:00 p.m."
The documentary also has its own soundtrack, which includes selections from Neon Jazz.
The screening is free to attend, but you do have reserve your spot online here ahead of time.
