Carbon Monoxide Week is about to get underway in Brant County and beyond.
BRANT COUNTY - Carbon Monoxide Week is coming up and you should make sure you're safe from the silent killer. This year's theme is Beat the Silent Killer.
Carbon Monoxide has no taste, smell, or colour. It should be remembered that 65% of injuries and deaths from Carbon Monoxide happen in homes in Ontario.
Here's how you can prevent poisoning in your home:
- Ensure fuel burning appliances, chimneys and vents are inspected every year.
- Make sure outside appliances and vents aren't blocked.
- Never have a vehicle or fueled engine inside your garage.
- Never use a stove, or oven to heat your home.
Jeff Balkwill, the Fire Prevention Officer of Brant County, says all alarms have expiration dates.
"Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms have a lifespan; basically the manufacturer will guarantee the devices in them for a certain amount of time. The new alarms to date are 10 years but we always recommend you check just to be sure."
Balkwill adds you need to have multiple alarms in the home.
"Carbon Monoxide alarms need to be put outside of sleeping areas of your home. So if your bedrooms are upstairs or in the basement you need them everywhere.
The public is also reminded that you can be fined if you don't have alarms in your home as it causes a serious health threat.
Carbon Monoxide Week runs from November 1st to November 8th.
