The Woodstock Police Service is encouraging everyone to keep an eye out for holiday scams.
WOODSTOCK - T'is the season where some people tend to get desperate and the amount of the scams and frauds tend to spike.
With this in mind the Woodstock Police Service is reminding everyone that if something seems to good to be true, than it probably is.
"Anything online, anything door to door, anything on the telephone you have to be wary of these types of scams; if it's too good to be true it probably is so be wary of the decisions you make over the phone or online. Don't give any personal information or financial information, never give your credit card numbers of social insurance number over the phone. People become more desperate this time of year and some people see this time of year as an opportunity to take advantage of people. I'm thinking there will be an increase of frauds and scams this time of year - I mean it is definitely something that happens day to day and all year round, however I do expect to see an increase this time of year."
Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM one thing you have to be careful of is people looking to steal your credit card information with credit card skimming devices.
"They look like kind of a bluetooth and what they will do is they will attach them to credit card machines, like gas station or drive through banks and they will actually read the numbers on the credit cards and your password and then the scammer will sell that information or make a card using your information."
Never send money to anyone or any business unless you are certain you know where that money is going. Also you will never win a contest you didn't enter and always be wary of people selling things door to door, in Woodstock they need a permit and photo I.D. to solicit at the door.
