A homeowner in SWOX actually had a scammer show up to their home after they received a call from a scammer regarding the Carbon Tax.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford OPP are warning the public to be wary of a carbon tax scam making the rounds locally.
Recently a resident of South West Oxford received a call from someone pretending to work for the Government. The caller claimed they could help the victim save money with the new carbon tax.
The caller provides a great deal of information on the savings and also offers the chance for the opportunity to cap the carbon tax. The caller then asks for personal information which consisted the account number on your Hydro One bill. Arrangements were then made to attend the residence to discuss the savings in detail.
On Wednesday an man described as East Indian showed up to the home to talk more about the Carbon Tax and was immediately told to leave.
The OPP is urging all residents to be aware and to stay sharp if they should receive a call from someone unknown offering a chance to beat the carbon tax. Do NOT give out any personal or financial information. Simply say no thank-you and hang up the phone.
The OPP would like to remind all residents to familiarize themselves with the various scams occurring in their communities. For more information on fraud, call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
