Woodstock Fire department receiving calls of furnaces shutting off because of block vents.
OXFORD COUNTY - A small amount of snow or ice build-up in vents outside the home can have fatal repercussions.
Coordinator for the Woodstock Fire Department, Lisa Woods said, "We're reminding people that both your dryers and your furnaces emit carbon monoxide outside the home so you really have to take a look around your house to make sure your vents aren't blocked by ice or snow."
Woods added that they have several calls due to carbon monoxide build-up because of blocked vents, "We don't necessarily need a large amount of snow to cause a problem, we've had a couple calls over the past few days where people's furnaces have shutdown and that's because the carbon monoxide is coming into the home and that's an automatic trigger to the system to shutdown."
Woods advises residents to frequently check the vents outside your home especially if there has been snow fall or cold temperatures.
"Ice can build-up prior to snow actually falling so every time there is a little bit of snow or a little bit of ice go outside and around your house check your vents make sure they're clear."
