TORONTO - A Toronto Maple Leafs legend has been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Borje Salming was a defenceman for the Leafs for 16 seasons, from 1973 to 1989. He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame back in 1996.

The 71-year-old is currently receiving treatment in his native country of Sweden in order to slow the progression of the illness. Salming says he is receiving the best possible care and he's asking everyone to respect his family's privacy at this time.

You can read Salming's full statement below.
