C&D Lanes is raising funds for the Canadian Caner Society of Oxford through a month long initiative capped off with a big VIP event.
WOODSTOCK - C&D Lanes is putting a local spin on the Knockdown Cancer event.
Co-owner of C&D Lanes Dave Skillings says in the past the funds raised supported the national Canadian Cancer Society, but they are keeping things closer to home this year. "It's a little different this year because usually we used to send the money in to our Bowling Proprietors of Canada and they in turn would make the presentation to the Canadian Cancer Society. This year it's actually going to go to our local cancer society - our Oxford Branch. So we're keeping it a little closer to home this year and we're hoping to get a little more support for it."
Skillings says they have really seen the community come together over the years for the cause: "This will be our 5th annual - the fifth year we've been doing this and just locally - just through our centre - we've probably raised over $12 000 already for it. Across Canada last year they raised over a quarter of a million dollars."
Although there is one big culminating event, there is an ongoing effort throughout the month of January. "Through the entire month of January for every public lane that comes in and for every pair of shoes they rent we donate 25 cents to the Knockdown Cancer Fundraiser," Skillings says." Cancer has touched myself and my wife's lives quite a bit so it's something very close to the heart so we try to do the best we can."
The big Knockdown Cancer VIP event will be on January 23rd from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. The afternoon includes fun activities like a penny auction, silent auction, manicures and clothes with proceeds going to the cause. And of course pink rental shoes! Tickets are $20.
The Woodstock Navy Vets and the Norwich Merchants will also be bringing the Highway 59 Rivalry to the lanes that afternoon as well before they take to the ice later that day.
