Eighteen teenage girls are getting hands-on experience at the fire stations in Blandford-Blenheim this week through Camp 85.
BLANDFORD-BLENHEIM - They're seeing if they have what it takes to be a female firefighter in Blandford-Blenheim.
Eighteen girls between the ages of 14 and 18 are participating in Camp 85 this week. They are doing hands-on exercises at the local fire stations this week before their graduation ceremony on Saturday.
Everything started in Plattsville yesterday with some water related exercises. The girls were able to draft water from a hydrant and use the hoses on fire trucks.
Director of Fire and Protective Services Drew Davidson says today's exercise in Bright will be all about forcible entry.
"We have a door prop that they will be practicing on, a roof prop where they will be cutting some holes to simulate what its like if they're on a roof, as well as a window prop where they will do emergency bailouts. So that should be fun for them."
The girls will be in Drumbo tomorrow where they will learn how to use the jaws of life to rescue victims of motor vehicle collisions. They will finish off in Princeton on Friday, learning how to use SCBA air packs.
Camp 85 was created in order to encourage more women to become firefighters, making it similar to the Camp Molly program that was hosted in Thamesford last month.
Davidson would like to host Camp 85 every year in Blandford-Blenheim.
"Our hope is that we do this every year and that we can expand it so all Blandford-Blenheim youth can have this experience."
