Blood donations tend to dry up in the summer, but the need for blood doesn't.
Donating blood can save a life and can really mean the difference between life and death after a serious accident.
The summertime is always tough for Canadian Blood Services as it is not always at the top of mind and people are out enjoying the nice weather. Director of Donor Relations Michael Betel says they are putting a call out to the people of Oxford to take time to donate this summer as it could potentially save a life. "Patients that are in a car accident, where you need 50 donors to save one accident victim's life, they also have ongoing needs with cancer patients who use about 5 units of blood or they need 5 donors every week - people with Leukemia on an ongoing basis need 8 units or 8 donors every week."
Betel says they need donors of all blood types and are really calling for people with O negative blood to donate because it is a universal blood type and can be transferred to anyone. You can donate blood anytime in Oxford County and they do have clinics coming up at Goff Hall in Woodstock from 1 - 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month, and at the Maranatha Church in Woodstock on the third Saturday of every month. They still have plenty of appointments available for the clinic happening this Thursday at the Goff Hall.
You can find more information on the closest blood donation clinic to you at www.blood.ca.
