OXFORD COUNTY - The Children's Aid Society highlighted youth success stories during their Annual General Meeting last week.
Erica Humphrey Wright, who is an an award-winning fitness instructor, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and author of “I Am My Own Superhero”, shared her journey as a former youth in care with the audience.
“Any child, youth, or adult can reach their potential and bounce back from challenges when given the proper environment, intervention, approach, and leadership.”
CAS Oxford also handed out a total of eight bursaries to local youth attending post secondary school at the meeting. The educational bursaries and awards are funded through the Society’s Endowment Fund with the Oxford Community Foundation and the Oxford Foster Parent Association.
Studies show that in Ontario, only 44 percent of youth in care graduate from high school compared to 81 percent of their peers. Interim Director of Service for CAS Oxford Giselle Lutfallah says the bursaries are made possible due to the overwhelming support that is received from the people and businesses of Oxford County who donate, sponsor or attend fundraising events which are hosted throughout the year by CAS staff and volunteers.
“We are very grateful that the people of Oxford County are so generous with their donations and support. This celebration is their celebration too.”
In addition to the youth bursaries, retiring Executive Director, Bruce Burbank, was presented with the Jack Ross Memorial Award by Dr. Maria Odumodu on behalf of the Board of Directors.
The award was established by the Board in 1985, in recognition of the commitment and contribution made to our community by the late Constable Jack Ross. It is given annually to an individual who has performed outstanding service beyond the call of duty to children and families of Oxford County.
