SAN DIEGO - They're almost home!
The Artemis II astronauts are set to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego at 8:07 p.m. Eastern Time today. NASA announced at 8:42 p.m. yesterday, that they had hit the halfway point between the Moon and the Earth.
Canadian Jeremy Hansen and his crewmates completed a historic lunar flyby earlier this week. It lasted six-hours, and the astronauts were able to capture stunning images of the moon and make other geological observations during that time.
They named two craters while they were there. One was dubbed Integrity and the other was named Carroll, in memory of Commander Reid Wiseman's wife who passed away in 2020.
The Artemis II astronauts travelled 406,771 kilometres into space, surpassing the distance record set by set by Apollo 13 in 1970, and going farther into space than any humans before.
They're halfway home.
