Cash for Snacks

A Thamesford food processor supports healthy eating at local schools.

It's a welcomed cash injection for school nutrition programs in Oxford County.

Today, a $10,000 grant was announced through the Oxford Community Foundation from the Cold Springs Farm Fund in Thamesford.

The money will purchase new equipment for the 23 school nutrition programs in Oxford.

Jean Carson with Maple Leaf Foods in Thamesford says the money comes from the fund set up by former Cold Springs Turkey Farm owners, Harvey and Erma Beaty.  "The money that went to the Oxford County Nutrition Partnership was $10,000, but last year, we gave away $50,000 in total."

They will have another $42,000 to give away in 2014 to food-related capital initiatives in Oxford and London-Middlesex.

Carson says the money for upgrades to school nutrition programs is a nice fit for their fund.  "Things to cook with and bowls and spoons, and they sort of surveyed all of their nutrition programs in Oxford and came up with a list."
