A local artist will create a chalk mural for Tori Stafford in honour of what would have been her 26th birthday.
WOODSTOCK - It has been 17 years now since the tragic death of Tori Stafford in Woodstock.
She was only eight years old when she was abducted and killed back in 2009 and she would have been celebrating her 26th birthday if she was still with us today.
In honour of Tori, local artist Sean Hammond will create a chalk mural of purple butterflies in Museum Square this evening and he's inviting others to join him.
"It's going to be close to the discount store there. I would estimate that it will probably is 15x10 feet or something like that, and everybody will come and put butterflies around it with chalk which will be nice."
Those who join in can draw their own purple butterfly or a personal message to Tori. Hammond will be in Museum Square from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. today. and several local businesses have purchased chalk to help support this event.
Hammond says this all started after he did another chalk mural on Riddell Street last week. He knew it was going to rain, so he posted a picture about it on Facebook.
"I just asked the city for any suggestions of where I might put my next one and what the subject should be and Katrina Stafford reached out to me and asked if I could do some purple butterflies in honour of Tori. When she asked me that, I got pretty emotional! So I made a couple of phone calls and it all exploded after that."
In honour of Tori's birthday, the Stafford family is also encouraging everyone to perform a random act of kindness in her memory. You could pay for the order behind you in a drive-thru, hold the door open for someone, or tell a joke to make someone smile.
