Rolph Street Public School is getting ready to close their doors, but the public is invited to walk the halls one last time today
TILLSONBURG - It's the end of an era in Tillsonburg as the Rolph Street Public School gets set to close their doors this June after educating the Public for 103 years.
The closing ceremonies for the school are happening June 12th and they have a big event planned for 1 p.m. today at the school. Principal James Bartley tells Heart FM they have rented a tent for the occasion and is inviting everyone to come out and celebrate the historic school. "We have dignitaries from the community, we have representation from the board, as well as trustees, and the director of education. Plus we are going to have our students to share some memories and some performances. So it's going to be a great day of celebration."
Bartley says they will also have an open house tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for anyone who wants to take one last walk through the school. The building will not be torn down as it has been deemed a historical heritage site and will remain in tact for now.
The last day of classes will be on June 25th and students will be transferred to three other schools in Tillsonburg next September. Most of the kids will be going to the New Westfield School, while others will go to South Ridge and Annandale. No layoffs are expected as a result of the closure as teachers and support staff at the school will be moving to new positions within the school board in the fall.
