Oxford County council has deemed an abandoned railway corridor in Tillsonburg as surplus.
OXFORD COUNTY - The abandoned railway in Tillsonburg has been deemed surplus by Oxford County council.
The abandoned railway was among the topics discussed by council during their recent meeting.
CAO of Oxford County Peter Crockett says council will now bring in a by-law to formally declare the lands as surplus before moving forward.
"We'll bring back a by-law that will do the formal declaration, and in doing that, we'll also bring council a strategy that we propose of the disposal of those lands."
A public notice from earlier this year drew interest on the lands from adjacent property owners, a housing developer and the Town of Tillsonburg.
Crockett says council will look at how to bring the lands back into the farming community.
"Without question, the discussion last night was from a public standpoint, for both protecting for the long term idea of trails and very clearly the encumbrance of a strip of land through active farms. And I think at the end of the day what council decided last night was that those properties going back to the farming industry, to the farming community and to the farmers was a valid approach to take with those specific lands."
