There will be County presence in Walker Industries peer review. County Councillors gave full support to sign the Memorandum of Understanding Wednesday night. The Memorandum states that a Peer Review Team will consist of independent, impartial, and objective advisers and consultants. Oxford People Against the Landfill have raised some concerns about whether the review will be truly independent. Warden Don McKay doesn't think they'll be influenced. "We know what we need to do, in reviewing the studies that are coming forward. I'm confident that we have the maturity and decisiveness to ensure that we're not influenced by the proponent...to ensure it's an unbiased process." Acting CAO Lynn Buchner is also sure it was the right move. "Absolutely. It allows us to participate without incurring costs and kind of oversee the process to ensure it is in compliance with the standards." A committee must be formed before the peer review starts. It will include 2 representatives from each participating municipality.
