The County will be putting in an application before citizens get their say on proposed amendments to the official plan.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council is attempting to take another step forward in terms of waste management.
Director of Planning for Oxford County, Gord Hough, tells us what the county is currently considering. "We're actually initiating an application to amend our official plan in a couple of sections primarily Chapter 2 which is our county development strategy, and then more specifically Chapter 5 has to do with our waste management. The idea is to develop policies that provide a more thorough planning assessment of a waste management facility application in the county."
Outside waste entering Oxford County could become a thing of the past and Hough comments on how this will effect the proposed landfill in Beachville. "What we are really hoping to do here is, not just specifically to any private proposal but waste management in general, a lot out of this is coming out of our sustainability plan. The community clearly wants to see the County go the route of reducing waste, what we are hoping these amendments do is just help us when we deal with those sorts of facilities not just landfills but waste management facilities as well."
Hough feels now that the first step has been made, the residents of Oxford will now have their say. "We will be initiating the application probably within the next week and then from there there'll be a full public process. There'll be a public consultation, then eventually the final amendments we brought back to council for consideration, and we're hoping that happens in January. It will be useful when we have applications or proposals that deal with waste management." Hough believes if this is successful it could help us become a zero waste community that much quicker as waste management applications begin to come in.
