The Oxford County Health Unit is reminding the public to protect yourself from West Nile this summer.
Earlier today a dead crow in nearby London tested positive for the disease. Manager of Health Protection Peter Haywood tells Heart FM this serves as a reminder that West Nile Virus is still prevalent in the region. "West Nile Virus is a mosquito born viral disease, and it is primarily circulates between birds and bird biting mosquitoes and is transferred to humans when a certain species of mosquitoes acquire the virus from biting an infected bird and then bites a human."
Haywood says the best way to protect yourself from the West Nile Virus is to wear a bug repellent containing DEET. It's also a good idea to wear light coloured clothing with long sleeves pants and socks when mosquitoes are present, especially at dusk and dawn when they are most active. You can also limit the amount of mosquitoes at your home by regularly emptying standing water on your property and covering openings in rain barrels.
