Local MPP and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman says the deal that was signed on Sunday night is bad news for supply management.
WOODSTOCK - The new United States, Mexico Canada Trade agreement could be bad news for the Dairy Capital of Canada.
Prime Minister Trudeau was quick to point out that the United States initially wanted to end the supply management system for dairy and poultry products and they did not let that happen. However local MPP and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman says the deal that was signed on Sunday night is bad news for supply management.
"We have been reaching out to the stakeholders and we are committed to working with them but they really have concerns that some of the concessions that were given are going to be detrimental to supply management. That is why we are pushing our Federal Government to ensure that they provide support to the farmers to deal with the impacts and obviously if their are major impacts, there are major impacts to supply management."
Hardeman says they are concerned about the impact this will have on our milk supplies that will hurt the dairy industry.
"We are very concerned about the impact this will have on our milk supply and what they call section 7, which is the manufacturing sector of our industry. The restrictions on anything we can do with the product, like exporting the surpluses and so forth."
Hardeman says the Ontario government will continue to stand for the dairy stakeholders and will continue to stand for their interests.
Prime Minister Trudeau says his government will take measures to protect the dairy industry.
