It's time to register your dog for 2016 at City Hall, or you could be facing a $60 fine.
WOODSTOCK - Make sure to stop by Woodstock City Hall and register your dog to avoid a fine.
Dog tags for 2016 are now available for purchase. Secretary to the City Clerk Gail Versteeg says you can save yourself a little money by registering ahead of the January 31st deadline. "If your dog is spayed or neutered - and we tend to refer to that as altered or unaltered - if you get your tag before January 31st if your dog's altered it's going to be $15, if it's unaltered it's going to be $20. There's also a discount for seniors. So if you're a senior and your dog is altered it's $12. If it's unaltered it's going to be $17."
After January 31st the price increases to $30 if they are altered and $35 for an unaltered dog. For seniors the difference is $27 for altered and $30 unaltered.
Versteeg says you could be paying a lot more if you fail to comply with the bylaw. "If you fail to register your dog for that year it's going to cost you $60 in a fine. And you have 10 days in order to register it, so if you leave it more than 10 and you get a visit from bylaw you can immediately be charged with a $40 fine and if it's later in the year that fine can go up to $60." The fines come into effect after January 31st.
There is also a practical reason to register. "Hillside Kennels will hold the dog for three days if it doesn't have a number and then it will go up for adoption," Versteeg says. "However if it has a dog tag then they can look up or call me and I can look up in database who purchased that tag so we can return the dog to their owner."
