"Don't Wait, Check the Date."

It's Fire Prevention Week and the Woodstock Fire Department is celebrating with the return of some fun programs.

WOODSTOCK - It's Fire Prevention Week and the Woodstock Fire Department has a lot planned to spread the message.

Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods tells Heart FM this year's theme is 'Don't Wait. Check the Date.'

"And that means that smoke alarms do not last forever. Ten years and then they should be replaced. Doesn't matter if they are hardwired or battery operated, all smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years. And that's something we're finding people don't know."

They will be inviting two kids to hang out at the fire hall for the day as Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief this week.

The Smoke Alarms for Pizza program will also be returning. During this program the fire department will follow a different pizza delivery driver every day from Tuesday to Sunday. When they arrive at a home, the Woodstock Fire Department will check for smoke alarms and if the house is fully equipped with fire alarms the Fire Department will pay for the pizza. If the home is not properly equipped the fire department will give them smoke alarms .

Woods says it has been very successful so far.

"We have had almost 100% compliance with people having working smoke alarms. And they're very happy and proud to see us in the community doing this kind of work. The one incident where we didn't have smoke alarms and we left working smoke alarms had a fire three weeks later and they got out because of the smoke alarms."
