OXFORD COUNTY - A couple from East Zorra Tavistock has received this year's Oxford Stewardship Award.
Scott and Jodie Zehr have received the honour, as a result of their environmental efforts on their farm property located just south-west of Tavistock.
Scott Zehr talks about some of the work they have done, after moving there in 2005.
"We've planted a lot of trees and set areas aside; grassed areas that we can protect close to the waterways. The largest one that we have been working on currently is a 2 acre wetland that we hope to be able to use for our camping program."
The Uturn Ranch Summer Camp encourages kids to enjoy the outdoors; through various activities including horseback riding, swimming and fishing. About 1,000 kids attended the camp last summer.
Zehr says protecting the environment runs in his family.
"My grandfather a long time ago has worked hard at conservation in this community, in Oxford County. I think it's something that he's kind of passed on. We look at our children and hope that some of these things can benefit them down the road and hopefully we can get some benefit as well."
The Zehrs will be added to the recognition wall in the Oxford County Administration Building, alongside the previous award winners. They will also receive a $500 gift certificate to go towards the purchase of original artwork by local artist Sue Goossens.
