Woodstock Police will be at Pittock Park tomorrow casting lines with local youth and TV celebrity Bob Izumi.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police aren't pulling the old bait and switch when it comes to connecting with kids.
They will be part of a fishing derby called Family Fishing: Kids, Cops, and Canadian Tire. This is a joint effort from the Woodstock Police, the Woodstock Police Association, Police Association of Ontario, Canadian Tire, and Bob Izumi from Fishing Forever.
The event is for all ages, and families are encouraged to come out and spend a day getting to know your local police officers. Although the event is free, Constable Nikki VanLeeuwan does ask that you bring your own fishing gear. "They do need to bring their own fishing pole, their bait, their reels, their tackle boxes. They do need to bring those things. If they didn't have a pole they should still come out because there will be some extras there that they can use."
The day will also feature prizes (such as new tackle boxes and fishing rods) and a barbeque.
This is all part of an effort to build a strong relationship between the police force and the youth in our community. "I've gone to the skate park for the McDonald's thing and people are looking at me like, 'We're in trouble. You know, we're doing something wrong.'" says VanLeeuwen. "And then they realize you know, that police are human beings. They actually care about their community, they want kids to see us as friends and allies and if they need us, we're going to be there to help them."
It all takes place July 4th at Pittock Park Conservation Area from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Woodstock Police are also currently running a campaign with McDonald's giving out free ice cream to kids with good cycling habits.
