The public is invited and encouraged to attend the first county budget meeting starting at 9am tomorrow.
Oxford County council will get a first look at the proposed 2016 budget on Wednesday morning.
Staff are bring forth a budget with a proposed 3.9% increase on property taxes and $71.6 million in capital spending for infrastructure projects in 2016. Those numbers will likely change as the County sits down for the first of three budget meetings. Warden David Mayberry tells Heart FM the 3.9% percent is just a starting point for the budget discussions.
"County council will say, 'Is that a reasonable number to live with? Do we need to cut it? If we cut it, how much?' And the process is if you're going to cut things out of the budget that's where the debate and discussion happen over what should or shouldn't be removed. It is fair to remember that for the last few years the increase has been lower than the rate of inflation, this year we are starting with a number that is higher than the rate of inflation and I think that will cause a lot of councillors to sort of pause and say what do we need this year and what can we put off into the future."
For the Oxford County Library the proposed levy is $3.5 million with a 3.4% increase.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the meeting which starts at 9 a.m. at the County administration building.
