Motorcycle enthusiasts can come out to the Woodstock Fairgrounds this weekend and see a show like no other.
WOODSTOCK - Flat Track Canada returns to Woodstock for another day of high energy fun.
Flat Track Canada will be hosting a half mile race over at the Woodstock Fairgrounds on August 1st. Competitors will be flocking from all over Ontario as well as New York and Michigan to get their chance to show their stuff. Flat track motorcycle racing is one of the oldest forms of motorcycle competition, and features high speeds and precision driving.
Unlike Motorcross, flat track does not feature twisted courses and jumps. Leanne Deadman says this gives spectators a show like no other. "You can actually sit in the stands, enjoy watching the whole race from one spot. That's the beauty of flat track. We put on a show for the spectators opposed to the spectator not necessarily seeing every single piece of action. People actually jump out of their seats and cheering, and it's just such great energy. Everybody just loves it."
Deadman also says there is a real feeling of community among the racers. Even the very young can get involved. "There really is no age restriction in that we have 4 year olds who race. As long as they can ride on two wheels, and have the fundamentals of understanding breaking, and have control of the motorcycle they can be out there. We have racers right up to - two years ago we have a gentleman who was 72 years old." A Flat Track Canada membership is also required to compete in this event.
The purse this year is $4 500, and over 500 people traditionally come out.
The event is taking place at the Woodstock Fairgrounds on August 1st. Gates will be opening at 10 a.m. with sign in closing off at noon. Youth heats kick things off at 1:30 p.m. and the official opening ceremonies will be at 3:00 p.m.
Admission is $15.
