Flu Season Begins in Oxford County

Southwestern Public Health is reporting two lab-confirmed cases of influenza A in Oxford County.

SWPH - Flu season has officially begun in the Southwestern Public Health region.

The health unit reported its first two lab-confirmed cases of influenza A yesterday. They're both young kids from Oxford County.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran is encouraging everyone to get the flu shot.

"The influenza vaccine has arrived in Ontario and is widely available. Now is the time to protect yourself and your community from this respiratory virus by adding a flu shot to your regular habits of handwashing, staying home when unwell, and covering your coughs and sneezes."

He adds you can get your COVID vaccine and flu shot at the same time.

"Anyone 5+ can receive both a flu shot and a COVID-19 booster at the same time. Save time and protect yourself from both viruses by booking at a pharmacy that can offer both flu and COVID-19 vaccination. Or, for the month of November, come to our COVID-19 clinics on Buller Street in Woodstock or Talbot Street in St. Thomas for a COVID-19 vaccine and ask to be vaccinated against the flu at the same time."

Common flu symptoms include a cough, sore throat, headache, runny/stuffy nose, fever, body chills, muscle/body aches, weakness, and fatigue.

You can find more information on the Southwestern Public Health website.
