INGERSOLL - The Town of Ingersoll launched an investigation after a couple of pets, required medical attention after attending the dog park near the Lawson Trail.
Staff found out that the dogs were likely getting sick because of leftover food that was being added to compost bins and being stored under a tarp.
Mixing dog food with waste is a very unhealthy combination, also this kind of storage will attract other creatures to the park, such as rats, skunks, raccoons and coyotes. These type of animals could lead to conflict with the other dogs at the park or the sharing of diseases like distemper and rabies.
Staff have removed the compost bins and the cache located under the tarp as a precaution. The Director of Community Services will be bringing a full report to the February Council meeting, with full background and proposed remedies for a more permanent solution to dog was generated at the park.
Signage will also be placed in the park which states: "Placing or dumping dog waste, food scraps or any other form of garbage or refuse in the Ingersoll Off Leash Dog Park anywhere other than in the garbage cans provided is strictly prohibited but the Town of Ingersoll. Failure to obey this sign is an offence contrary to the Trespass to Property Act and fines up to $10,000 may be levied."
