Fusion Youth Centre to Serve as Cooling Centre This Summer

The Fusion Youth Centre will serve as a Cooling Centre for the Town of Ingersoll during heat advisories this summer.

INGERSOLL - With more hot humid days on the horizon the town of Ingersoll will use the Fusion Centre as a Cooling Centre on days where heat alerts have been issued by Southwestern Public Health.

People will be screened coming through the doors and will be directed to one of three specific areas, one for people who do not show any symptoms, one for high risk people with preexisting medical conditions and the third for people who are COVID-19 symptomatic.

Heat alerts are issued when the temperature rises about 31 degrees and does not fall to less than 20 overnight.

Tips from Southwestern Public Health when heat alerts are issued:

- During extreme temperature conditions, stay indoors in an air-conditioned building if possible
- Limit time in the sun when the UV Index is most intense, between 11am - 4pm
- Seek shade when outdoors, especially during mid-day
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and decrease intake of caffeinated/alcoholic beverages
- Take cool showers or baths
- Apply Sunscreen with SPF 30 (or higher), 20-30 minutes before going outside to ensure absorption and reapply every 2-3 hours
- Check regularly on children, elderly, persons with disabilities and individuals with chronic illnesses
- Never leave young children, elderly or pets in a closed parked vehicle for any period of time
- Find a public Cooling Centre at www.swpublichealth.ca/extreme-heat
