Big Brothers Big Sisters of Woodstock and District teams with Woodstock Meadows Golf Centre to give six boys professional golf lessons
WOODSTOCK – Six boys have been selected to learn to play golf through professional lessons with the help of the Woodstock chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters and Woodstock Meadows Golf Centre.
"Henry [Vink, owner of Woodstock Meadows] realizes the need for volunteers in our community. He's doing everything he can to provide facilities and provide a golf instructor for our kids," said James Rijneveld, Big Brothers group program and volunteer coordinator.
The weekly, three-hour lessons will run every Wednesday for eight weeks over July and August and will include golf clubs, use of the driving range and chip and putt course for children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to play golf, Rijneveld said.
"We wanted to get kids that were a little bit older but are still within the ages of nine to 13 that would benefit from this opportunity. Most of these kids are on a waiting list for a big brother," he said.
Rijneveld hopes the kids to are able to gain mentors in the volunteers, "but also, be exposed to a sport that does teach a lot of life lessons and teaches maturity and structure and certain etiquette."
"I want these kids really to have fun and be able to really experience a game that is inherently expensive and have the exposure to that," Rijneveld said.
