The Spikevax COVID-19 booster is a half dose of the regular vaccine and is now approved for adults 18+ in Canada.
Health Canada has given the green light for the Moderna Spikevax COVID-19 booster shot for adults 18 and older.
The booster shot will only be available six months after a second dose. The Spikevax COVID-19 booster is a half dose of the regular vaccine.
In a statement from Health Canada, they say booster shots are necessary to help combat the Delta variant.
"Evidence continues to show that being fully vaccinated provides strong protection against serious illness, hospitilization and death from COVID-19, including against the Delta variant."
The booster shot is designed to help people maintain their prtoection against COVID-19 over time. Right now in Ontario, only elibile groups can get a booster shot. They include the following:
- Individuals aged 70 and over (born in 1951 or earlier);
- Health care workers and designated essential caregivers in congregate settings (including long-term care home and retirement home staff and designated caregivers);
- Individuals who received a complete series of a viral vector vaccine (two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine or one dose of the Janssen vaccine); and
- First Nation, Inuit and Métis adults and their non-Indigenous household members.
