Public Health is reminding parents to set a good example out on the slopes and on the rink this winter.
Although there's no snow yet, soon enough winter sports enthusiasts will be hitting the slopes.
Public Health Nurse with Oxford County Lorna Boratto is encouraging everyone to wear a helmet whether you're skiing, snowboarding, or even just going skating at the arena. "We're encouraging parents to wear helmets to set the example for their young people - their teens and children. Wearing helmets in sports, and we're looking particularly at winter sports, does help reduce the risk of traumatic head injury."
Boratto also says that helmets are not one size fits all. "We're encouraging people to wear a properly fitted helmet. And the helmet needs to be appropriate for the activity they are doing; so there are specific winter helmets for skiing and snowboarding, for tobogganing they should be wearing that helmet or a hockey helmet."
If you're planning on leaving the county to find some fresh powder, make sure you're doing it safely cautions Boratto. "What they have been able to determine on a national level is that head injuries on ski hills are the highest cause of death. Even though we don't have ski hills here in Oxford County, many people do ski and where ever you go you'll want to use the appropriate equipment."
