A piece of history is landing at the Tillsonburg Regional Airport as Vimy Flight commemorates Canada's 150th.
TILLSONBURG - The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association is hosting an open house featuring cross-country commemorative warplane tour Vimy Flight.
On Monday July 17 and Tuesday July 18 the Tillsonburg Regional Airport hosts an opportunity to see vintage First World War aircraft, Second World War training aircraft, and meet the crew.
Allan Snowie, team leader of the Vimy Flight Team, tells Heart FM the planes are far more than just a machine - they are a symbol of Canadian dedication and bravery.
"It is to bring the story of Vimy home to those who couldn't be there. It is a very important story for Canadians. I should phrase it that we shouldn't glorify war but we were at Vimy to commemorate the losses and now we're home now to celebrate Canada's 150th."
Snowie says these pilots and planes played an integral part in the war.
"They are the first fighters that our airman flew. Their job was to protect the reconnaissance aircraft which were taking pictures of the trenches and these picture maps were developed to give to the soldiers that were going over the top. But also more importantly for the artillery who could clear the area."
The event is free and will have static displays open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.
