Hockey Trial

The trial into the January 2013 assault at a midget hockey game in Woodstock has begun

WOODSTOCK - A Brantford hockey player has pleaded not guilty to assault following a game between the Brantford 99ers and Woodstock major midget Navy Vets back in January of 2013.

The teen, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act was charged in June of 2013 following an on-ice assault at the Woodstock Community Complex which allegedly started after Woodstock player Nick Major snowed the Brantford goalie.

Woodstock Police laid the charges after reviewing video of the game provided by Major's parents.

On day one of a four day trial,  Major -- who was the first witness for the Crown -- claimed his helmet was removed by the accused and an assault took place though Major says he never fought back.

Two linesmen and a referee also took the stand Monday claiming it was a chippy game and that it was hard to tell exactly what happened as they were all trying to break up the fight.

The trial will resume Wednesday.
