Holiday Waste Reminders from Oxford County

Oxford County has some tips on how you can reduce your environmental impact while you're unwrapping gifts this holiday season.

OXFORD COUNTY - It's the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also become the most wasteful.

Lots of people will be giving gifts to their loved ones over the next week, which means lots of wrapping paper and packaging end up at the curbside. Oxford County has some tips to help you reduce your environmental impact this holiday season:

- Remove all tape, plastic film, twist ties, and other objects before recycling cardboard packaging.
- Break down, flatten and bundle all cardboard boxes, with bundles no larger than 75 x 75 x 20 centimetres.
- Wrapping paper can be recycled, except for foil-based paper.
- Remove all ribbons and bows. Save and reuse for next year where possible.

Bulky pieces of styrofoam (often found in larger gifts) can be dropped off at the Oxford County Waste Management Facility, Tillsonburg Transfer Station, and Woodstock EnviroDepot free of cost.

There will be no changes to waste collection for most communities within Oxford County, with Woodstock being the only exception. You can find Woodstock's updated holiday waste collection schedule online here.

County officials would also like to remind everyone not to use white garbage bags when we're experiencing snowy conditions because they can be hard to see. You should also shovel out an area for your to place your garbage and recycling at the curbside.

Once the holidays are over, you can drop your real Christmas tree off at any brush, leaf, and yard waste depot. You can find the holiday hours for the Oxford County Waste Management Facility, the Woodstock Enviro Depot, and the Tillsonburg Transfer Station below:

Oxford County Waste Management Facility
- Open 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve (Saturday December 24th) and New Year's Eve (Saturday December 31st).
- Closed on Boxing Day (Monday December 26th).

Woodstock Enviro Depot (regularly open on Saturdays only)
- Open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on New Year's Eve (Saturday December 31st).
- Open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday December 28th.
- Closed on Christmas Eve (Saturday December 24th).

Tillsonburg Transfer Station
- Large item depot open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday December 28th and Tuesday January 3rd.
- Large item depot closed on Christmas Eve (Saturday December 24th) and New Year's Eve (Saturday December 31st).
- Yard waste depot closed on Christmas Eve (Saturday December 24th) and New Year's Eve (Saturday December 31st)
