Life Jackets Save Two Lives on Lake Erie at Turkey Point

For the second weekend in a row, OPP and the Coast Guard searched Lake Erie on a rescue mission. Thankfully this time, they had a happy ending.

TURKEY POINT - OPP are crediting life jackets with saving two lives in Turkey Point this weekend.

Search and Rescue crews were dispatched to the waters of Lake Erie after two people were stranded in the Lake.

Acting Sargeant Ed Sanchuk says two people went overboard on Sunday evening around 8 and a family member called police when they didn't come home.

"Members of the Marine Unit, in conjunction with the JRCC and the Canadian Coast Guard began to search the waters of Lake Erie. Members of the Coast Guard found both people floating in the water at around 9:45 that night, 2 kilometres east of Pottahawk."

Both people were hypothermic and taken to the hospital for treatment. Sanchuk says he is certain, life jackets saved two lives this weekend.

The search and rescue mission happened, just one week after a young boy drowned in Lake Erie.
