The Woodstock Environmental Advisory Committee honoured a couple of WCI students this morning who are making a difference in the world today.

The Woodstock Environmental Advisory Committee honoured a couple of local students making a difference in the world today.

They were at WCI to present awards to Alayna MacDonald and Emily Hall. Alayna and Emily won the letter writing contest, that asked students to talk about the impacts of climate change, what climate changes means to them and possible solutions.

WEAC Chair Elise Gabrielli says she was blown away by both letters.

"With Alayna MacDonald, one thing that stood out to me about her letter is that she started off acknowledging the fact that she has grown up being very much aware that climate change is a huge issue and threatening many aspects of our daily lives, not just with the increasing flooding, forest fires etc, but also how it is impacting our northern region animals and their sustainability."

Gabrielli says Emily Hall's letter also highlighted the key issues and she used statistics to back it up.

"She included statistics from the IPCC, speaking to over the next several years, we are going to see a 1.5 degree Celsius increase. The fact that she went the extra mile, in quoting these statistics that are very real and very relevant right now too."

Both girls had some great ideas for solutions, including fossil fuel reduction, reducing energy consumption and both girls incorporated into the letter, ways we can help as individuals by making some minor changes to our daily lives.

Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch was on hand for the ceremony as well, which was also done in conjunction with Waste Reduction week.
