Make Fire Safety a Priority While Decorating

If you plan on putting up holiday decorations, make sure you doing so safely this holiday season.

As you decorate your home for Christmas this year, the Woodstock Fire Department is putting out a few tips to keep your family safe.

Public Information Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department, Lisa Woods, says it is important to pick out the right tree. "I see that all of the local places that typically have fresh cut Christmas trees are in full bloom, so you want to take a look at those trees to make sure that they haven't been cut down for too long, and that their needles are still fresh. Make sure that you have a stand that can carry about 4 litres of water because that is what that tree is going to drink a day."  

Woods also encourages homeowners to check the lights when they're brought out of storage. "Just make sure that the cords are good there is no frays in the cords at all. A timer is an excellent thing to have and that way they have less chance of overheating and potentially causing a fire. If you are going to use candles that light rather than the battery operated ones make sure they are in a sturdy container in a spot away from anything that can catch fire; when you go out, blow out."  

The tree itself should also be placed properly according to Woods. "We need to put that tree obviously in a spot that is not near any heating sources.  When you are looking at the strands each year you should be going over them and make sure they are not frayed, there's no loose wires ,or anything that will start a fire of course."
