A mostly snow free December could help the City of Woodstock stay under budget for Snow Removal.
WOODSTOCK - A mild December meant good things for Woodstock's snow removal budget.
City Engineer for Woodstock Harold de Haan, says a harsh start to the year meant a large chunk of the budget was used in January to clear the ice and snow on the roadways. "We need to keep in mind that budget works on a calendar year, so we started dipping into the snow removal last January already. If we had a typical fall, we would probably have been over budget by now. Luckily we have been blessed with warm weather, so hopefully we will end up under budget for this year."
De Haan says when city employees aren't combating snow and ice, they are free to look after other tasks for the city. "Our guys are Jacks of many trades so if they are not plowing they are out there doing other things. They have been doing road patching, they have been looking at sign maintenance, they have been doing sewer inspection, a lot of other things that sometimes get pushed to the back burner. Our guys have definitely been taking advantage of the warm weather."
Today though the plows are out in full force dealing with last night's freezing rain. Please adjust your driving according to the road conditions and give the plows space to do their job.
