The Financial Protection for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Farmers Act is set to receive Royal Assent on Tuesday.
OTTAWA - Oxford MP Arpan Khanna says this is a historic moment for farmers across Canada.
Bill C-280, also known as the Financial Protection for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Farmers Act, passed third reading in the Senate and it's now awaiting Royal Assent.
It's supposed to protect fresh produce growers and suppliers from experiencing financial losses due to bankrupt buyers. It will make sure they get compensated for their hard work and contributions to the food supply chain, while also considering industry challenges such as the highly perishable nature of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Khanna says it's a step in the right direction.
"Fresh fruit and vegetable farmers and suppliers are vulnerable to significant financial losses caused by bankruptcies throughout the supply chain. With the passage of Bill C-280, farmers in Oxford and across Canada will finally have the protection they need and deserve."
Khanna is thanking Scot Davidson, the Conservative MP for York Simcoe, for introducing the bill in the first place.
"MP Davidson’s tireless efforts have been instrumental in achieving this milestone. His commitment to Canada’s farmers and food producers is inspiring, and I’m proud to stand with him and our Conservative team in delivering real solutions for Canadians."
