National 211 Day in Oxford County

211 is a portal you access over the phone or online, in order to get non-emergency information.

OXFORD COUNTY - The head of United Way Oxford is encouraging people to take advantage of the 211 service.

It's a portal you can access over the phone or online, in order to get non-emergency information.

Executive Director Kelly Gilson says it can help with questions related to community services, health services and social services.

"It can help people source information on things like financial support, access to health services, maybe meeting basic needs."

Gilson would like to shine a light on the portal today, which happens to be National 211 Day.

"One of the things that we need to be really working on is creating a better awareness and understanding of what 211 is, how it's different from 911 because it's not for emergency services and to keep it in front of mind so people will indeed use it."

About 860 Oxford residents accessed the service last year; the largest call volume since it was introduced in the area in 2010.
