Norfolk OPP officers will be keeping a close on eye on all school zones and bus stops today.
NORFOLK COUNTY - You might be able to spot some OPP cruisers close to school zones and bus stops today.
It's the first day of school and Inspector Rob Scott, the Detachment Commander for Norfolk OPP, says officers will be out and about to make sure everything goes smoothly.
"As drivers, we know that at certain times of the day we can expect to encounter school buses during our travels. Drivers need to be vigilant and pay attention to the flashing red lights and other safety equipment used on buses. Our children's safety depends on it."
The Norfolk OPP would like to remind all drivers to be on the lookout for school buses. You have to stop for a school bus whenever they have their red lights flashing and their stop arm out.
Kids walking to and from school should be using the sidewalk whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk to use, you need to be far off onto the shoulder of the road facing oncoming traffic.
Those riding their bikes to and from school need to wear a helmet if they are under the age of 18. They also need to follow the rules of the road and be aware of their surroundings at all times.
