The senior was told to forward $19,000 in bitcoin after being informed of "illegal activity" that was association with their SIN number.
NORFOLK COUNTY - A senior from Norfolk County is out $19,000 after falling victim to a Social Security scam.
Police the senior was home when they got a call from someone pretending to work at Service Canada. The unknown person claimed that the victims Social Insurance Number (SIN), had been compromised and that there was illegal activity that was associated to their SIN number. The victim was informed that they could help clear this matter up by sending bitcoin so it did not affect them in the future. The elderly resident subsequently forwarded approximately $19,400 in bitcoin.
The OPP is urging all residents to hang up the phone if they receive a call from someone claiming that they are with Service Canada or a police officer and asking for any personal information or money. Service Canada and the police will NOT call and inquire about any financial information, your Social Insurance Number or ask for money in order to help you.
